Every HPMC use in industry can be traced back to one of five functions the molecule performs in water: it thickens, it holds water, it forms films, it suspends solids, and it gels reversibly on heating. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a nonionic cellulose ether whose methoxyl groups (19–30%) and hydroxypropyl groups (4–12%) determine how strongly each function appears in a given grade. Once a formulator understands the five functions, the long list of HPMC uses stops being a list to memorize and becomes a set of problems to solve.

Dry mix mortar, tile adhesive, plaster, render, putty and self-leveling compounds use HPMC to hold water in the mix while cement hydrates and to give the wet material body so it stays where applied. Retention of 90% or more directly controls open time, workability and final bond strength, which is why HPMC dosage is one of the first variables a dry mix formulator tunes.
Water-based paints, primers and texture coatings use HPMC to reach application viscosity, to suspend pigment and filler so they do not settle, and to slow water loss while the film levels. The nonionic character keeps HPMC compatible with latex and surfactants, and grades are selected across the 300–200,000 mPa·s range depending on whether the product is a spray paint, a roller paint or a thick texture coat.
Liquid detergents and cleaners rely on HPMC for body and clarity; ceramics use it as a binder and green-strength builder; polymerization processes use the protective colloid and suspension behavior; and the reversible 65–75°C gelation finds work wherever heat must trigger structure. HPMC is used in dry mix mortars, tile adhesives, renders, plasters, putties and joint compounds as a water retention agent and thickener. It holds mixing water in the fresh material (retention ≥90%) so cement hydrates properly, and it gives the wet mix body so it stays where applied with a workable open time.
Uses describe the job the polymer performs — thickening, water retention, film formation, suspension or thermal gelation. Dosage is how much powder you add, usually expressed as a percentage of the dry mix or solution weight, and it depends on the grade viscosity you select within 300–200,000 mPa·s and the performance target of your formula.
Natural gums vary batch to batch, degrade quickly and often cannot tolerate salts, surfactants or heat. HPMC is a consistent, nonionic cellulose ether: its viscosity, substitution ratio and water retention are controlled in production and verified on a COA, so the same use delivers the same result in every batch.
Often yes. Because all five functions come from the same molecule, a mid-viscosity grade can thicken, retain water and suspend solids at once — which is why a single grade often serves both mortar and paint. For extreme requirements, such as very high body or a precise 65–75°C gelation behavior, a dedicated grade is a better fit.
